the biovite project - reviews & opinions

v 4.0

Dittohead in Doomworld's "Newstuff Chronicles #292" (October 2006)

The Biovite Project is a ZDoom based partial conversion for Doom II. However, the level set comes off as a creative 1996 mod with ZDoom effects and new monsters thrown into the bunch. The level design is very basic and blocky*, while creative considering the limited experience of the mapper. Gameplay seemed a bit tricky at first, thanks to large open areas with hitscan enemies, but later became easier as I was entrenched in the cramped corridors under the facility. Some of the new enemies are a general pain (I'm looking at you, miniature raptors), while others are flat out goofy looking. I can't knock the author for trying to come up with a creative idea; however, I hope his future releases are more refined as there is plenty of room for improvement.

* Comment: "Basic and blocky"? Did he even play all maps??

v 3.0

Ismaele on his site Outpost of Doom

"It is a sort of Partial Convertion, with completely new graphics (textures, flats, sprites, etc.) and monsters (some replacing the old ones and some new ones, made in DECORATE). The main theme is tech-base, but there are also more realistic places and natural landscape. As for graphics, all levels are very good-looking, although architecture and detail aren't painstaking, but the combination of new textures, flats and sprites make everything look good. ACS Scripts and ZDoom effects (like deep water, 3D bridges, slopes, coloured lighting, etc) make every square or bare room look nice; moreover they are useful for gameplay, that is quite interesting and enlivened by simple puzzles! As for difficult, the .WAD itself isn't very hard, but new monsters, like Chaingunners with BFG or big insects make everything worse than normal, so that the levels become challenging. A must for every Doomer!"

v 2.0

"Well, this wad set pretty much sums it all up in 2 words. The first is 'Half'. The second is 'Life'. Ok well not exactly, but this certainly reminded me of it. You start in a small mountain pass and come up on a laboratory compound, where you are greeted unfriendly by a ton of fully suited guard guys with guns, of whom also have those square like de-contamination face plate things. But the variance of enemies is incredible in this. You get to fight giant fish, pterodactyls (I think?) and a stone baron, among others. What was really fun to see is a well, giant insect. That I'll leave for you to discover. This wad is questionable in terms of playability, but I got through it ok. Try it out!"

Enjay in the ZDoom forums

"I thought it had some very interesting ideas and some cool enemies and sounds. However, I also found the levels to be quite plain in places and I didn't feel there was a clear sense of direction a lot of the time. I kind of stumbled upon stuff rather than working my way through.
I liked the greenhouse area, though it had a noticable frame rate hit on my reasonably decent machine when looking in some directions."

Xaser in the ZDoom forums

"Heh, I played around with it a bit (I died twice and forgot to save, so I haven't finished it just yet), and I think it is really good! Finally, an SS Nazi replacement that's not... well, a nazi.
Anyway, I really like all the new monsters and those scientist dudes and stuff, the levels are really good (and are quite detailed enough, in my opinion), and the music fits quite nicely.
So therefore, great job! Keep up the good work!"
