Chip or anyone else ever hear of an 8bit game called 'The Sentinel'?
it had a sequel on the Playstation (and possibly PC too?) called 'Sentinel Returns' which was scored by the film director/composer John Carpenter.
the original game was about as ground-breaking as Elite - filled 3d shapes, not wireframe! it somehow had 10000 (non random) levels in a game that was only 32k (no multi-load either). that wasn't as bad as it sounds as when you finished a level you jumped forward by the number of energy units you had left

anyway, last night i had the idea of making a 'Sentinel' Doom map. heh, can anybody guess what i'm gonna use for the Sentinel?

hi!
I'm certainly the wrong one to ask, as my electronic gaming carreer began 1995 with Doom, ended 1995 with Doom and then re-began with Doom and other games in 2000
But your description intrigued me and I found a site for Chip (German only):
It's a contemporary review and the game really seems to be weird and strange from the description.
But... how to make a Doom map out of it? *lol* No idea...
But how about making a nutty.wad with 10000 maps? THAT would be fun.

10000 maps, rofl.
oh this is gonna be a sweet one. the slopes gave me some headaches to start but it's cool now. real problem is designing a '3D' map on paper
huh, and i really hoped i could use a flat bigger than 64x64 but no dice...
Keen may be shelved for now - this may well end up being MAP30 on Nutty. i think the idea has potential as an SP/DM WAD all of its own too.
anyway, i played some of the original game last night on my BBC Micro emulator. can't resist posting some screenies
the introductory map screen for the first level (you don't get to see it again after that):
heh, he doesn't look so tough from a distance...
looking out over the map:
getting closer but still too far below him (hope he doesn't spot me!):
trees - good for getting energy back:
wah! extreme close-up! heh, thinks he's got me does he? doesn't realise i'm only letting him look at me so i can get a screen cap :
needless to say he wasn't around for much longer after i took my pic
oh no! what's that? how did that get in there?

That's looking interesting, but I still can't make out how this map will be as to the gameplay.
Is it a big mass of slopes and platforms? Like Whack-A-Mole the other way round?
Anyway, I'm curious to see it in action.
I had a great nutty idea, too, yesterday and began with a new map. Unfortunately, there's no map left for me in the nutty.wad. So I guess, I just began with Map 01 (or something) of nutty˛ (I'd like to name it like that: nutty˛.wad -How would that be spelled in English?)
The name of the map will be "Squeezing Squirrels", I think.

WOOT! dead thread revival! and cross posting too!
but best of all - dead project revival!
heh, made me laugh re-reading this thread last night...
'the slopes gave me some headaches' - lol, that was putting it mildly.
'this may end up being map30 on Nutty' - rofl.
and Milian talking about 'Squeezing Squirrels' and the onset of Nutty"
and bah, Adereth compared my Sentinel map to Whack-A-Mole too i'd forgotten you said that Mili and i still didn't really see it until today - it was just because i had a few too many pits near each other in a row.
but i fixed that oversight and there will be no similarities here. still, it was kinda funny that my latest map bore a resemblance to my first
and only 6months in the making
(must go update Nutty" thread now)
